That's me, Ms. Nadine, and my doggy, Skylar. It's hard to see how happy she is, but you can trust me that her dog smile is HUGE. That's because she had just finished marching in the Locust Valley Memorial Day Parade with the Locust Valley Library a few years back. If you have time and you'd like to earn additional volunteer service credit, please consider joining and marching with us in the parade this year on Monday, May 30. You can contact myself or Ms. Leslie for specific times and details. It's a great way to support your library while waving to all your friends and neighbors! Your families are welcome to march as well. Skylar and I hope to see you there! Library customers will have quite a pleasant surprise when they check out their materials. What better way for our Teen Community Club to enjoy their last evening of the season, than with some random acts of kindness and a little pizza! Teens wrote out close to one hundred of their own "kindness cards" with friendly, positive messages. They decorated them, personalized them, and after a little pizza break, they ran to all of the favorite spots in the library! Whether it was DVD's, magazines, new fiction, teen fiction, or more, they left dozens and dozens of "kindness cards" in materials for unsuspecting library customers. They all laughed and smiled as they wrote out their cards, imagining the joy their handwritten card might bring. It was a great night for all! Thanks to all our Community Club Volunteers! Be sure to check out our summer volunteering opportunities, such as Teens Read to Tots, Summer Reading Buddies, the play performance and more! Sign up begins May 31. Visit the blog homepage for more photos, great books, and other cool things at the library. I am SO excited! Tonight our amazing teen Community Club is having its monthly meeting and we will be making fashion scarves to donate to Bethany House, a local women's shelter. I would like to say that I knew it was International Women's Day the night that I decided to do this. But, I didn't. What I did know was that our Community Club teens would jump at the chance to do this. You see, this is our first year. It is a small group of dedicated teens that meet on the first Tuesday evening of every month to do good for others (and earn service credit). Starting in October, this generous group has made beautiful Cards for Hospitalized Kids. We've written letters to our troops and Veteran's through Operation Gratitude, and we held a bake sale to support Best Friends Animal Society. They've generously given of their time and have been most enthusiastic when we got to make something to give. They are a crafty and creative bunch! I am super excited to say that the scarves are a simple, DIY t-shirt craft that doesn't involve any sewing (perfect for me!). I cannot wait to see the amazingly creative work our group does. It's not everyday you get a group of teens with such a gift for giving. I cannot wait to see the finished product and deliver a little fun, fashion-flair to women in our community. Stay tuned for pictures of the creativity and the finished product. |
